8.5% tax rise proposed for 2024/25 by Newport Council.
This follows on from an 8.5% tax rise last year!
Newport Council has had the highest budget increase boost from the Welsh Government this year (+4.7%) of all the 22 council’s across Wales.
Yet we’re still set to be hit with an 8.5% tax rise in 2024.
Last year, Newport saw the second highest council tax rise in
Cllr Matthew Evans MBE, the Newport Conservative Opposition Leader in the council chamber, said the extra costs would mean a “not-so-happy new year for our residents”.
Cllr Evans said he understood the need to raise council tax rates in line with inflation, but questioned why the 8.5% rate had been proposed when “inflation is going down at the moment”.
He said Newport residents would be “shocked and dismayed” by the size of the proposed rise, after the city council had been awarded the “highest [local government] settlement in Wales from the Welsh Government”.
“I’m not sure what message this sends to residents,” Cllr Evans added.
