On Friday 16th February, members of the Newport East Conservative branch met at the Caerleon Town Hall to select their candidate for the upcoming general election.
After hearing from a number of candidates, Cllr Rachel Buckler was selected. Cllr Buckler is currently a sitting member of Monmouthshire County Council, representing the Devauden ward. She is hoping to be a fresh face to represent the new Newport East constituency in Parliament, which now includes areas such as Caerleon and Pill.
Commenting on her selection, Cllr Buckler said:
"I’m delighted to be selected as the Conservative Candidate for Newport East. It’s a privilege to be able to champion this constituency, and work for the people of Newport East.
"Newport in an important city in South Wales, and needs to be better served in the future.
"Stretching from the rural areas to the heart of the city, I look forward to meeting as many people as possible and working for the good of Newport East.
"It’s time for a positive change in Newport, and I’m committed to helping achieve this."
Also commenting on the selection, Huw Davies, spokesman for the Newport & Islwyn Conservative Federation said:
" We are delighted to have selected Rachel as our candidate in Newport East. We shall be campaigning on the issues that matter to the people of Newport.
" Whether that the be the future of steel making in the city or promoting the great potential of developing Newport's tourism sector.
" Only the Conservatives offer the people of Newport East a change from decades of Labour's managed decline of the city."
