STATEMENT FROM HUW DAVIES
Caerleon Conservative Campaigner and local resident.
“New bus shelters have been springing up right across Newport including areas such as Malpas, Bettws, Ringland and Alway. I’m greatly concerned that once again Caerleon been ‘overlooked’. Some bus shelters are in need of maintenance. Some look ‘dated’ such as the one on Mill Street.”
“Residents in Caerleon pay some of the highest council tax rates, yet we always seem to be the last to receive any infrastructure improvements. Caerleon is a major tourist destination yet we have no railway station, no public toilet and even park benches for the elderly are lacking, especially near the amphitheatre and museum.”
Natasha Asghar, Member of the Senedd for South East Wales and Shadow Minister for Transport, said:
“Yet again we see Caerleon being overlooked by the powers that be, and it’s just not acceptable.
“Buses are an absolute lifeline for many and improved facilities undoubtably make life easier for passengers, so it’s extremely disappointing to see Caerleon has been excluded from these upgrades.
“Residents and visitors to the town deserve better, and that’s exactly what the Welsh Conservatives will continue to push for.”
Background information
In June 2020, councils in Gwent received over £1 million in grant funding from the Welsh Government’s Local Transport Network Fund and the Local Transport Fund. A large part of this funding was allocated to providing new bus stops.”
Overall in 2020, the Welsh Government invested £22.6 million in 21 projects across 15 council areas in Wales, through the Local Transport Network Fund and the Local Transport Fund.
Newport has seen a big roll-out of new bus stops in every area of the city - apart from Caerleon it seems.
